Montreal seems to have an almost unlimited supply of outstanding museums and art galleries, many of which house truly impressive collections of art works and local artifacts. Most of the top cultural attractions can be found in and around downtown Montreal and admission is often free.

A large collection of contemporary art is available at the Modern Art Museum, including works by Picasso amongst others, while for local history, head to the McCord Museum, where you will find an endless display of exhibits.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is one of the city's premier art galleries and dates back to 1860, being located on the western side of the downtown district. Housed in a number of pavilions, which are linked by underground walkways, the museum is home to more than 25,000 items, including historic paintings, prints, temporary exhibits and local memorabilia. This facility is highly regarded throughout Canada and also features a popular café and many seasonal events.

Modern Art Museum (Musée d'Art Contemporain)

Montreal's Modern Art Museum, in the Latin Quarter, features a large and impressive collection of modern art works created since the 1940s. With various medias and styles, the Modern Art Museum stands in the Place des Arts complex and boasts in excess of 6,000 works of art, with many notable featured artists, such as Picasso and Andy Warhol. Temporary exhibitions are held throughout the year.

Canadian Center for Architecture (CCA)

Both a museum and a working company, the Canadian Center for Architecture (CCA) actively promotes architecture at all levels. Housed in a stylish, modern building, the museum based around the nearby Shaughnessy House and includes many surprisingly appealing exhibits, a sculpture garden with views over southern Montreal, and a large bookstore.

Bank of Montreal Museum

Located in the Old Montreal district, the Bank of Montreal Museum is housed in a historical building, which dates back to the early 1800s. With self-guided tours, highlights include many interesting bank-related items and machinery, old currency and banking artifacts, together with stylish Romanesque architecture and intricate stone sculptures.

McCord Museum

The McCord Museum was founded in the 1920s by local collector David Ross McCord and today houses almost one million items, which include archaeological finds, period costumes, paintings and photographs, local history, animation and cultural exhibits. Situated in downtown Montreal, guided tours around the museum's endless exhibits are available, while the gift shop is the perfect place to end your visit, with many reasonably priced souvenirs on offer.
